The Winston School of Short Hills Summer on the Hill camp is geared toward students in grades 1-8 who have learning differences such as ADHD, executive function challenges, dyscalculia and dyslexia. Founded in 2010, the camp offers a blend of academic support and enrichment opportunities in a fun, relaxed and supportive learning environment.
“Our summer camp features highly trained teachers, flexible schedules and specialized programming that allow parents to hone in on the support their child needs in the classroom while at the same time exposing them to a traditional summer camp experience,” says Heather Heycock, director of the Winston Center for Learning.
Students receive instruction in subjects such as reading, writing, math and executive function skills in the morning, and then in the afternoon, campers are invited to choose their own schedule with enrichment activities like STEM, art, baking and performing arts. Small class sizes allow campers to receive individualized instruction catered to their unique learning style.
The six-week camp is located on the campus of The Winston School, which has served students for more than 40 years. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on phonics, reading, writing and language arts. The Summer on the Hill camp aims to offer students the opportunity to maintain skills acquired in their previous school year and sharpen them for the fall.
“Parents especially seem to appreciate our multi-sensory approach and encouraging instructors who are meeting kids where they are to help bridge gaps, build their confidence and prevent the ‘summer slip’—and all while having some fun along the way,” Heycock says.
