Final exams can feel overwhelming which is why making a study plan well in advance is so important. Here are some tips from Jordan L. Yanoshik, the Associate Director of Academic Support at the University of Pennsylvania.

Create a Study Schedule
Plan your study time in advance and allocate specific time slots for each subject or topic you need to cover. Breaking down your study sessions into manageable chunks can help you stay organized and focused. Make sure to include regular breaks to avoid burnout.

Utilize Active Learning Techniques
Instead of passively reading your notes or textbooks, engage in active learning methods such as summarizing the material in your own words, teaching the concepts to someone else, creating flashcards, or practicing with past exams and quizzes. These techniques promote better understanding and retention of the material.

Practice Time Management
Set deadlines for completing each topic, section or chapter and stick to them. Prioritize your study tasks based on their importance and allocate more time to challenging subjects or topics you’re less familiar with.

Identify an Ideal Study Environment
Choose a quiet and comfortable study environment free from distractions where you can focus effectively. This could be a library, a quiet corner in your dorm room, or a coffee shop. Ensure that you have all the necessary study materials, such as textbooks, notes, and stationery, readily available.

Create and Review Study Notes
Condense your study material into concise notes that highlight key concepts, formulas, and definitions. Reviewing these notes regularly can reinforce your understanding of the material and help you memorize important information more efficiently. Consider using visual aids such as diagrams, charts, or mind maps to organize complex information.

Join or Form Study Groups
Collaborating with peers can be a valuable study tool. Joining a study group allows you to discuss difficult topics, quiz each other, and gain new insights from different perspectives. Teaching and explaining concepts to others within the group can deepen your understanding of the material.

Utilize Technology and Online Resources
Take advantage of educational technology and online resources to enhance your study experience. Use digital flashcards apps like Anki or Quizlet to quiz yourself on important concepts. Watch online tutorials or lectures related to your course material to reinforce your understanding. Additionally, consider using productivity apps or time management tools to stay organized and on track with your study schedule.

Practice Self-Reflection
Regularly reflect on your study habits and progress to identify what’s working well and what areas need improvement. Ask yourself questions like: Am I understanding the material thoroughly? Are my study sessions productive? Am I effectively managing my time? Adjust your study strategies accordingly based on your reflections to optimize your preparation for exams.

Stay Positive and Manage Test Anxiety
Maintain a positive mindset throughout your exam preparation journey. Visualize success and remind yourself of your past achievements to boost your confidence. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, or progressive muscle relaxation to manage test anxiety. Remember that it’s normal to feel nervous before exams, but staying calm and focused can help you perform at your best.
