Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales … a new Supper Club concept is here and will give you a chance to taste them all!
Z Taco, a new Mexican fusion restaurant in Millstone that is the sister restaurant to Zinna’s Bistro in Cranbury, offers a Supper Club meal on the last Tuesday of every month. There are at least seven courses of small plates made with fresh ingredients and homemade sauces. Each dish will feature the same ingredient throughout, offering a fun twist for the night’s tasting.
Owner and Chef Chris Zinna creates a surprise menu for the Supper Club, but he changes even those recipes as the night goes on. During a recent Supper Club, we tried eight delicious dishes. The roasted corn chowder soup had chorizo, prosciutto, fried chopped tortillas, micro greens and queso fresco with a kick.
The chile relleno was a charred poblano pepper stuffed with cotija cheese, chopped meat and mozzarella. It was battered in egg white and fried, making it light and fluffy. The salsa roja was made with tomatoes, serrano chili peppers and onion and a watermelon radish on top.
Sopes are made with a fried masa (corn flour) base. The discs are piled high with shredded romaine lettuce, onion, avocado, queso fresco and creme fraiche. Pick it up and bite it, fold it like a taco, or use a knife and fork to dig in.
Taquitos, or little rolled tacos, were stuffed with shredded chicken, onion, tomato, cheese and crispy potatoes; and topped with lettuce, tomato and onion, along with queso fresco, creme fraiche and cotija cheese on top.
The braised short rib tamale was the star of the show. The masa (corn husk) was wrapped in maseca (a steamed banana leaf), and filled with short rib braised for 8 hours. The meat was tender and flavorful. The salsa verde on top is a must-try.
Next up was a chicken burrito, with chicken, sweet peppers, dirty rice, corn and beans wrapped inside a housemade tortilla. Chili oil, cilantro oil and red sauce were there for dipping.
Tacos El Pastor, which is typically a fan favorite, came out on the biggest dish for the biggest presentation. Slow braised pork sat atop a housemade corn tortilla with pickled onions and red sauce.
The sweet finale? A chocolate arroz con leche, aka rice pudding. Served warm, it is comfort food at its best: rich and chocolately with a touch of cinnamon – plus a cappuccino.
The cost for the Supper Club tasting is $75 per person. Z Taco also has a full menu of starters like Mexican tater tots, chorizo and clams, and shrimp quesadilla; fire-roasted street corn or taco salad; and a mix of tacos, burritos and entrees (you had us at pineapple marinated ribs).
Z Taco is BYOB and located at 514 Rte. 33 in Millstone Twp., Monmouth County. The restaurant is open for dine-in and takeout Tuesday through Saturday. The next Supper Club is scheduled for February 27. Check Instagram for updates to sign up.
Zinna’s Bistro is located at 10 Cedarbrook Dr. in Cranbury. Specializing in a gourmet Italian American menu, they also offer weekend brunch with ala carte items such as a chorizo omelet, lemon ricotta pancakes, mushroom tacos, lobster mac & cheese, chopped Italian salad, cavatelli with broccoli rabe, turkey avocado panini and shrimp salad croissant.
The Z Taco Cranbury Food Truck is open from 9 am to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays near Zinna’s, and has a selection of Mexican breakfast items, salads, tacos and burritos, along apps. There are a handful of other food trucks: Zinna’s Mobile Bistro, Zinna’s Grill Trailer FingerZ and FrieZ, Jersey Smashers Lemonade Trailer, Zinna’s EatZ and Jersey EatZ.
