A new ranking of public school districts in New Jersey is out, and there’s a new district in the No. 1 spot.

According to Niche, Northern Valley Regional High School District in Demarest is the best public school district in New Jersey for 2024. Last year, the top 3 school districts were Millburn Township School District, followed by Northern Valley and Princeton Public Schools.

For 2024, Northern Valley placed No. 1 for teachers and No. 2 for the best place to teach in NJ. There are 2,076 students in grades pre-K – 12 with a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. According to state test scores, 58% of students are at least proficient in math and 71% in reading. The district received an A+ overall, with ranks of A+ for academics, teachers and college prep; A for clubs and activities and administration; and B- for diversity.

Princeton Public Schools came in at No. 2. There are 3,759 students in grades pre-K to 12, with a student-teacher ratio of 11 to 1. According to state test scores, 49% of students are at least proficient in math and 72% in reading. Princeton received an A+ overall, with grades of A+ in academics, teachers, clubs and activities, college prep and administration; and a B+ grade for diversity.

Millburn Township School District placed third on the list. There are 4,796 students in grades pre-K to 12, with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. According to state test scores, 68% of students are at least proficient in math and 79% in reading. The district received an overall grade of A+ with grades of A+ in academics, teachers and college prep; A- in clubs and activities; and B in diversity.

These are the top public school districts in New Jersey for 2024, according to Niche. The top 19 schools received an overall A+ grade.

  14. Westfield Public School District, Westfield
  15. New Providence School District, New Providence
  16. Bernards Township School District, Basking Ridge
  17. Pascack Valley Regional High School District, Montvale
  18. West Essex Regional School District, North Caldwell
  19. West Morris Regional High School District, Chester
  20. Holmdel Township School District, Holmdel
  21. River Dell Regional School District, River Edge
