When you think of a bucket list, you think of adventure, unique experiences and something worthy of sharing on your Instagram. Honest Eco, run by biologists in Florida who conduct eco-tours, recently surveyed 3,000 families about where their alternative bucket list destinations are around the country – and two spots in New Jersey made the list.
The findings put an emphasis on natural beauty, outdoor activities, education for children about environmental conservation, regional diversity and representation, rich travel experiences, cultural experiences, seasonal and climate considerations, unique and uncrowded experiences, and more intimate and personal travel experiences.
Cape May Point State Park was the first Jersey locale on the list, placing 69th out of the 150 overall spots in the U.S. The park is as peaceful as it is beautiful and we love the view from the top of the Cape May Lighthouse.
Back on the ground you can go bird watching, look for historic World War II bunkers and towers, hike along the trails, or go surf fishing (swimming isn’t allowed).
There’s also a Nature Center where kids can check out live and taxidermied animals from the area.
The Pine Barrens are the second hidden gem, placing 86th on the list. We don’t have to remind you about the legend of the Jersey Devil. Outside the depths of the woods, there are plenty of beautiful areas for hiking, kayaking and bird watching in its 1.1 million acres!
The Pinelands is the biggest surviving forest on the eastern seaboard south of Maine’s North Woods, and has over 800,000 acres of forest, of which only about half is permanently preserved.
These are the Top Alternative Bucket List Locations in New Jersey, according to Honest Eco:
No. 69 Cape May Point State Park
No. 86 The Pine Barrens
