It’s no secret that East Newark is home to one of NJ’s most beloved diners. Tops Diner, an old-school spot that’s been around since 1942, is as Jersey as it gets, complete with squishy bar stools, metallic accents, cozy booths and vintage decor. Embarking on a new chapter in its tasty legacy, Tops in undergoing a massive reconstruction.
While diners will have to find another place to score epic breakfast while its closed for renovation, it’ll be well worth the wait: Tops will be three times as big by the time it reopens to the public, according to News 12 New Jersey. The expansion will add indoor and outdoor (hello, al fresco!) seating, as well as parking spaces to the property.
Tops Diner is located at 500 Passaic Ave. in East Newark. A construction start date is still TBA, but it’s anticipated to take four to six weeks from start to finish. That hiatus will feel a whole lot longer for eggs benedict lovers, meatloaf fans and cheesecake connoisseurs alike, but we have a feeling the payoff will be delicious. After all, there’s a reason Tops has been voted Best Diner in NJ not once, not twice, but three consecutive times by our readers who weighed in on New Jersey Family’s Annual Ultimate Bucket List.
