Think you need to splurge on pricey medicated shampoos to get rid of lice? Think again. We've found the easiest (and cheapest) way to fix her hair.
If your kid is one of the unlucky ones (6 to 12 million in the U.S.) who end up getting that dreaded phone call from the school nurse this fall, you probably have the perfect lice-removing remedy already in your shower. Surprisingly, standard store-bought conditioner is just as effective at removing lice and nits as over-the-counter delousing remedies, according to a 2014 study in the Journal of Medical Entomology. Even simple deionized water (purified water stripped of all its mineral ions) was as good at washing the nits out as the specialty products.
