We’re so ready for spring and next month’s Philadelphia Flower Show is exactly the preview of flowers and sunshine we need right now.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will present “United by Flowers” from March 2-10. Expect to see flowers, trees and lush shrubs at every turn. Kids from local schools are shouting out their neighborhoods through garden designs. Areas are designed to represent Roxborough, South Philly’s Pennsport and the Italian Market, Spring Garden and Doylestown.
If you’re looking for advice for your own backyard garden, talk to seed and plant experts on hand. You’ll find inspo in the PHS Hamilton Horticourt, where gardeners will compete for a blue ribbon from judges. Members of The Plant People Place can answer questions about houseplants.
There’s a free gardening speaker series planned, with workshops scheduled up to four times a day. Topics range from garden design, vegetable gardening, native plants, container gardening, shade gardening, rock gardening and houseplants.
History lovers should stop by the Penn Museum Ancient Food & Flavor exhibit to learn when humans started making wine, growing potatoes and more. Art lovers will appreciate the botanical-inspired artwork and jewelry on display.
At Kids Cocoon, children can plant a seedling, read a story and more. Family Frolic will take place on Sunday, March 3 and will have free activities and programs for kids, plus face painting, a mascot visit and giveaways.
On Friday, March 8, leashed dogs are welcomed from 5-8 pm and there will be doggie-themed activities, too.
Be sure to check out Artisan Row, where you can make your floral crowns, candles, floral handbags, floral bouquets, terrariums, dried flower bud vases and botanical jewelry. The Makers Market features handcrafted jewelry, floral prints, artwork, essential oils and more for sale.
The Philadelphia Flower Show takes place March 2-10 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 1101 Arch St., Philadelphia, PA. Hours are 10 am to 8 pm March 2-9, and 10 am to 6 pm March 10. Tickets are $49.99 for adults, $35 for students ages 18-24 with valid ID, and $25 for children ages 5-17.
