Paper Mill Playhouse is “taking the lead” from the storyline of its next production, doing community outreach by giving away free tickets to local high school students.
The community theater’s “Take a Ticket” program is a new initiative for the premiere of “Take the Lead” in April. Up to 1,000 free tickets will be offered to 10 local high schools within Essex County. Reps from Paper Mill’s Education Department contacted the schools directly to invite their students, providing about 100 tickets to each school available on a first come-first served basis.
“Take the Lead” is based on the dance movie about the real-life work of Pierre Dulaine (played by Antonio Banderas in the movie), a former professional ballroom dancer who brought dance into New York City public schools as a way to teach confidence, dignity and creativity through the arts. The organization Dulaine founded in 1994, Dancing Classrooms, has served more than 700,000 K-12 students around the world for over 30 years.
“Take the Lead” runs on select dates from March 29 to April 27, with opening night on April 6. Audio-described performances are at 1:30 pm on April 20 and 26. Open-captioned performances are at 1:30 pm on April 26 and 7 pm on April 27. An ASL-interpreted performance is 7 pm on April 27.
The free tickets for students will be valid during the musical’s preview period, on March 29 and April 2-6, at 7:30 pm.
Paper Mill Playhouse also offers a variety of accessible tickets, including $20 student tickets; $30 Under 30 tickets; and discounts for veterans and military personnel, first responders, educators, and through New Jersey’s Families First Discovery Pass for those enrolled in state assistance programs.
Paper Mill Playhouse is located at 22 Brookside Dr. in Millburn.
