
A new report just put New Jersey as the second safest state in the country.
Consumer Affairs Journal of Consumer Research weighed five factors (11 individual metrics total) to determine the safest states in 2024. New Jersey garnered 86.2 points out of 100, placing second to only New Hampshire (with 87.2 points) after ranking first in 2023.
New Jersey ranked 2nd overall in the study, plus:
2nd for public safety
4th for violent crime safety
7th for property crime safety
12th for climate safety
18th for driving safety
New Jersey has the lowest rate of rape in the study (16.8 incidents per 100,000 residents, compared to 40 across the country) and ranks second overall for its police force – 424 officers per 100,000 residents. The state ranks 18th in driving safety overall – though two recent, separate studies ranked New Jersey as 3rd for teen driving safety and 5th for safe driving tests. NJ also placed 30th in terms of deaths caused by aggressive or careless driving.
