A major magazine is causing a stir for featuring a cover model breastfeeding her naked baby boy, her suede shirt unbuttoned. Elle Australia’s June issue shows model Nicole Trunfio with her breast exposed, nursing her 4-month-old son Zion.

Seeing supermodels and actresses breastfeeding babies isn’t new–Gisele Bundchen famously had a photo snapped getting her hair and makeup done while nursing her daughter Vivian, and Miranda Kerr has also posted pictures taken while breastfeeding son Finn. But women’s magazines typically stop short of showing moms nursing their children.

And in fact, Elle Australia didn’t plan on putting Trunfio breastfeeding her baby in the issue at all, let alone on the cover.

"This wasn't a contrived situation: Zion needed a feed, Nicole gave it to him, and when we saw how beautiful they looked, we simply moved her onto the set," Elle Australia's editor-in-chief Justine Cullen explained on the magazine's website. "It was a completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture."

Not everyone will see the breastfeeding cover of the issue, as it will only be sent to the magazine’s subscribers. The original cover–with just a photo of the beautiful mom holding her new baby–will be the one available on newsstands.

Not surprisingly, the magazine has sparked a passionate debate and a flood of comments. Much of the response has been positive. Model Trunfio also weighed in on Instagram.

"There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is,” she wrote. “There is nothing worse than a mother judged for feeding her hungry child in public. I'm so proud of this cover and for what it's stands for."
