Liberty Science Center is one of our favorite destinations in New Jersey thanks to its awesome science exhibits and epic planetarium shows. If you’ve never been, LSC: After Dark opens up the museum at night for an evening out sans kids with access to all of its exhibits, plus food, drinks, and dancing – and now it will be held every week.
On Thursdays from 6-10 pm the Liberty Science Center is open exclusively for guests 21+ who want to go on the Infinity Climber, a sturdy structure you can climb through three stories above the ground, take selfies with tamarin monkeys in the Wild About Animals exhibit; or who want to check out The Great Train Set, Microbes Rule! or Wobbly World.
Although the monthly party has been going on for a few years, LSC kicked off its weekly nights out with a Dinner in the Dark with Chef David Burke on October 23. As soon as you got to the fourth floor and enjoyed a glass of champagne or lavender lemonade, you were escorted onto the elevator and then blindfolded so that the entire dining experience was in the dark. Arriving at the eighth floor of the new Robert Wood Johnson III tower, we were led to our seats in what turned out to be a beautiful event space overlooking the Manhattan skyline on one side and Lady Liberty on the other. Keeping our eyes covered the entire time, we were treated to three delicious courses, plus dessert, of Chef Burke’s creations, each paired with beer or wine.
After dinner, we had access to the entire museum. The newly redesigned Touch Tunnel was open, where you crawl through complete darkness and touch objects hidden inside. We climbed the Infinity Climber and then checked out The Science Behind Pixar exhibit, where you can learn about everything that goes into making the popular movies, from line drawing to computer animation to lights and sounds to editing.
This week’s LSC: After Dark is a Pixar Party, where you can eat, drink and dance while checking out movies like “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo” and “The Incredibles.”
We went to the December 7 holiday edition, where the Mariah Carey Laser Light Show was all we wanted for Christmas! There were dance battles, Christmas photo ops, smoky cocktails, holiday market vendors and all the science exhibits we could get our hands on – literally. The Mariah Carey show continues on the December 14 and 21 dates.
Also on December 14, check out a Taylor Swift laser show, sock skating rink and space talk.
The December 21 event celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with an old-school hip-hop laser show and the Wonders of the Winter Skies planetarium show.
Future dates include Queen on December 28, 90s Night on January 4, Lady Gaga on January 11, Bob Marley on January 18 and Pink Floyd on January 25.
Some of the shows have designated times and some of the activities require an additional fee aside from your general admission ticket. Liberty Science Center is located at 222 Jersey City Blvd., Jersey City.
