Fodor’s just named the 12 Best Boardwalks in America and Atlantic City’s iconic boardwalk took the number one spot!
From carnival games to ice cream and French fries, strolling the boardwalk is part of the quintessential summer experience. It’s no surprise that Fodor’s chose Atlantic City’s boardwalk for the top spot — the boardwalk dates back to 1870 and is said to be the world’s first and longest. “The structure’s original intent was to protect the nearby hotels from unruly ocean waves, but over time, as the boardwalk grew to its current length of 5.5 miles, it became an international entertainment hub,” says Fodor’s. Indeed!
These days the Atlantic City boardwalk features high end hotels like the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City and fun spots such as Atlantic City miniature golf. There’s the Central Pier Arcade and Speedway for tons of fun games and taking a ride on the observation wheel at Steel Pier is a must for any Jersey resident or tourist.
Here are the top 12 boardwalks as named by Fodor’s:
- Atlantic City, New Jersey
- Long Beach, Long Island, New York
- Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach Boardwalk, California
- Floating Boardwalk of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
