The New York Knicks are in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, when they lost to the San Antonio Spurs. The team’s historic run (they are up 1-0 after an epic comeback in game 1) has inspired some friendly competitions between our area and San Antonio.
Six Flags Great Adventure vs. Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Great Adventure President Mike Fehnel and Fiesta Texas President Robert Bustle announced a friendly wager through social media: the losing park will update its front gate marquee in honor of the winning city, and display their colors throughout the park.
Plus Great Adventure would have to light up the Giant Wheel in black and white, the Spurs’ colors; while Bustle will wear blue and orange attire and decorate his park in matching colors.
The losing park will also donate $500 to charity: Great Adventure will donate to a charity of Bustle’s choosing, while Fiesta Texas will send money to GA’s new Project Purple initiative, which partners next year’s roller coaster with pancreatic cancer research.
Central Park Zoo / Staten Island Zoo vs. San Antonio Zoo
If the Knicks win their first championship title since 1973, then the San Antonio Zoo will fly the Knicks’ flag for one day; and vice versa. The San Antonio Zoo had previously challenged the Oklahoma City Zoo during the Western Conference Finals. Rumor has it, they’re extending the challenge to the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium.
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Texas Senator Ted Cruz are having a food fight. If the Knicks win, Cruz will send over Texas BBQ, Shiner Bock beer and Blue Bell ice cream. Gillibrand said she would treat Cruz and his staff to a meal at Joe’s Pizza and a Brooklyn Lager if the Knicks fall to the Spurs. The losing fan will also wear the winning team’s jersey.
Archbishop Gustavo GarcÃa-Siller of San Antonio and Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York are also having a mini food fight of their own. If the Spurs win, Archbishop Hicks will send a box of bagels, cream cheese and lox from H&H Bagels to Texas; if the Knicks come out on top, Archbishop Gustavo will send curated packages of Texas favorites from grocery chain H-E-B, including Texas Pecan Coffee, Cowboy Cookies, Texas Heat Trail Mix, 1877 Mineral Water, That Green Sauce, Texas-Style Barbecue Sauce, and Butter Tortilla Scent candles.
