Try Maple Sugaring
Head to Tenafly Nature Center for a really sweet experience. This wintry highlight teaches tree identification, the history of syrup making and how sap is gathered. Your brood will get to visit the center’s tapped tree and boil down the sap to make fresh maple syrup. The Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham is also hosting two maple sugaring sessions this Sunday, and is teaching kids the whole process from tree to pancake. Don’t leave without getting a taste!
Champions of Magic
If your kids love being amazed, this show at UCPAC in Rahway is for them. Five illusionists will perform incredible feats, like escaping from Houdini’s impossible torture cell, levitating above the stage and making incredible predictions. The performance runs from 3-5 pm. Ticket prices start at $22 per person.
Practice Spins on an Ice Rink
Work on your figure eights with the kids at an indoor rink near you. Want to come someplace more scenic? Try Newport Skates, an outdoor ice rink in Jersey City that boasts views of the NYC skyline.
Get Outside
Don’t let low temps deter you from getting out with the fam. Consider going on a hike, or visiting a National Historic Park, like the Great Falls in Paterson. Want to get super seasonal? Try skiing, tubing or snowboarding at Campgaw or Mountain Creek. Even more fun? Low-impact paintballing in West Milford, especially for kids.
Have a Blast Indoors
Really not up for braving winter winds? Stay warm at an indoor play place, rock gym or water park. Is your kid a gamer? Head to a cool arcade. Little athlete on your hands? Try roller skating, bowling or golfing. Mini-homebody? Get creative with DIY projects (yup, even slime) you can do together.
