Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton is presenting two new thought-provoking exhibits as part of their new Perspectives series — Local Voices: Memories, Stories, and Portraits and Spiral Q: The Parade, both of which open on April 23.
Spiral Q, a community-based organization that has advocated for social justice for 27 years, presents a retrospective exhibition that uses artmaking in order to teach, encourage conversation and enact change.
This immersive installation highlights Spiral Q’s commitment to community expression. The exhibit includes memorial tributes, wearable structures, large scale puppetry and more.
Participatory workshops and community collaborations make the exhibit accessible for all ages. A related three-week residency at Artworks Trenton and a processional from Trenton to Grounds for Sculpture will take place in July.
For Local Voices, Grounds for Sculpture partnered with Madhusmita Bora, a folk and traditional artist, teacher and journalist. Bora gathered oral histories to present a range of diverse and uniquely personal stories within the Indian American community.
Community members throughout NJ shared their stories through visual and audio presentations to reveal their experiences with topics such as age, caste, economics, immigration status, religion and more.
Both exhibits are co-curated by Kathleen Ogilvie Greene, Chief Audience Officer at Grounds for Sculpture and Quentin Williams, Founder and CEO of Dragon Tree Media Group. They will be on view in the Domestic Arts Building April 23 – January 7, 2024. Grounds for Sculpture is located at 80 Sculptors Way, Hamilton. Timed admission tickets are required and can be purchased here.
