In his daily press conference today, Governor Murphy announced his latest executive order which prohibits Internet and phone providers from shutting off people’s access until 30 days after the public health emergency due to COVID-19 is over.

Additionally, the order prohibits downgrades, service reductions or late fees due to nonpayment, and requires reconnection of any Internet or phone service that’s been disconnected due to nonpayment after March 16.

During the briefing,  he spoke about the importance of people being able to stay connected during this quarantine, especially for students who need online access for distance learning and employees who need it to work remotely.

In March, Murphy enacted a moratorium on removing people from their homes due to evictions or foreclosures for up to 60 days after the state of emergency is lifted. He also removed work search requirements for 8 weeks for people who have filed for unemployment and okayed extended benefits for up to 26 weeks in one calendar year.
