This might sound personal, but how often do you and your spouse have sex? If you answered once a week or more, you’re in luck. A new study has found that once a week is the optimal amount of time you need between the sheets for a happy marriage.
What was surprising was that more frequent sex didn’t make couples any happier, according to study lead author Amy Muise, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto-Mississauga. But any less, and their satisfaction with each other and their relationship dipped noticeably.
Researchers analyzed surveys of more than 30,000 Americans collected over 40 years and published their findings in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.
Interestingly, the once-a-week ideal applied to both men and women, young and old couples, and those who’d been together for a short time or a long time.
"Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week," Muise said in a statement. "Our findings suggest that it's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner, but you don't need to have sex everyday as long as you're maintaining that connection."
