These are the 10 Best NJ Counties to Live In, New Study Says

Most of the picks by Niche were in North or Central NJ.

DUKE FARMS

Niche just released its Best Counties to Live in New Jersey for 2023 and a beautiful county in Central Jersey topped the list! Niche considered many factors including public schools, cost of living, job opportunities and local amenities to come up with its list. Here are the top 10 counties to reside in the Garden State according to the website:

  1. Somerset County
  2. Bergen County
  3. Middlesex County
  4. Morris County
  5. Mercer County
  6. Hunterdon County
  7. Monmouth County
  8. Burlington County
  9. Union County
  10. Hudson County

While all of these counties are spectacular in their own right, it’s easy to see that the list leaned heavily toward North and Central New Jersey. There are plenty of great counties in South Jersey (hello, Cape May County!) and still many others throughout the Garden State that families flock to.

The top pick on the list, Somerset County, received a grade of A+ for its public schools. Residents here say they love the diversity their county offers. Many say it’s very family friendly and a place where neighbors know and look out for each other. Niche ranked Somerset as #1 in their Best Counties for Families category and the county also took the top spot for Best County for Outdoor Activities. Somerset is home to Duke Farms, which offers more than 1,000 acres to explore our state’s natural beauty.

Bergen County, number two on the list, is home to so many gems, it’s no wonder it made the list. From American Dream and BergenPAC to the beautiful Ramapo Valley Reservation and Tenafly Nature Center, there are so many dynamic places to keep families entertained.

Middlesex County is a fantastic place to raise a family and comes in at number three on this list. From Rutgers Gardens to the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park to TopGolf, weekends here are never boring.

Coming in at number four on the overall list, Morris County ranked high for being one of the healthiest counties in the Garden State. Residents who love culture and the beauty of the great outdoors have access to the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC), The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the Morris Museum.

Mercer County, with Princeton University, the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton and Grounds for Sculpture, stakes its claim to the number five spot on the list.

HUNTERDON 579 TRAIL

Over in Hunterdon County, which ranked #6 on the list, residents and visitors love the 579 Trail which takes you through some of the best wineries, restaurants, farms and farmer’s markets in our state.
