Though more than 10 percent of children have a speech sound disorder, such as lisps or stuttering, pediatric screenings for these issues (which are required at every well visit) have proven ineffective. To improve routine screenings, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association is currently revamping screening recommendations to identify kids who need help earlier, and they’re looking to parents to take the lead. Recent research by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found parent-administered screenings were actually best at finding kids with language delays.
