When it comes to summer fun, you don’t have to get on a plane to feel like you’re taking a family trip. Nearby Westchester County offer so much to do for families, just a short drive from home. And with so many great events coming up in this area, there’s never a wrong time to go.

For dog lovers, the 146th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will return to the historic Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown June 18-22. It’s a chance to check out all the different breeds and see the dogs do their stuff – just beware, your kids might spend the ride home asking for a pup of their own.

For music lovers, there’s plenty going on this summer in Westchester. On July 9 the 16th Annual Pleasantville Music Festival takes place at Parkway Field. In addition to headliners, breakout stars and local artists, there will be a beer and wine garden, fun activities for kids and a zero-waste program to keep the Earth happy, too. Caramoor’s Jazz Festival on July 20 features jazz performed amid the lush gardens of Katonah’s marquee center for music and art. Jazz Forum Arts will host dozens of free outdoor summer concerts at five locations in the municipalities of Dobbs Ferry, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Ossining.

Gardens Conservancy will host its second annual Minnie Untermyer Concert Series through Sept. 4 in the amphitheater in the Walled Garden.

Even though it’s summer, there is never a bad time to learn about history. Sleepy Hollow’s Kykuit is once again welcoming visitors. History buffs can dig into Westchester history at any number of places, like Lyndhurst Mansion, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, Philipsburg Manor, The Union Church of Pocantico Hills, or with a Historic Homes and Landscape tour of the eight-sided Armour-Stiner Octagon House, a National Historic Landmark.

Kids will never turn down a trip to the famous Playland amusement park in Rye. Renowned for its historic rides, beachside setting and Art Deco architecture, the park offers thrill rides as well as calmer, family-friendly options.
