CONGRESS HALL

Country Living ranked 40 of the Prettiest American Towns to Visit During the Winter and a NJ spot made the top 10! It’s easy to see why NJ would be a top summer destination, but when it comes to winter travel, the Garden State is also great. Besides our ski resorts, indoor waterparks and boutique hotels in charming towns, a spot that locals (and travelers) won’t want to miss is all the way at exit zero — that’s right, Cape May!

Cape May is a seaside town with Victorian homes that attracts visitors in the summertime for its pristine beaches. But just as the first snowflakes begin to fall, this resort town becomes a magical winter wonderland. Shoppers enjoy treading the cobblestone streets in search of treasure (and hot chocolate). The historic Congress Hall resort is always decked out for the holidays. And if you’ve got the kids in tow, there are plenty of chances to meet up with the big guy himself and spread some holiday cheer in Cape May.

Here are the top 10 from Country Living’s list:

1. Leavenworth, Washington
2. Portsmouth, New Hampshire
3. Bar Harbor, Maine
4. Rochester, Michigan
5. Glenwood Springs, Colorado
6. Park City, Utah
7. Dunton, Colorado
8. Sitka, Alaska
9. Cape May, New Jersey
10. Taos, New Mexico

“Don’t forget about beach destinations in the winter,” says Country Living of its #9 choice. “Picturesque Cape May is a Victorian-era resort town with a shop-lined main street that’s particularly festive during the holidays. No, you probably won’t be spending much time on the beach, but you can book a stay in a cozy B&B.”

Of course Cape May has so much great shopping, strolling and dining (not to mention the museums and theater and Beach Plum Farm), but we think a winter day at the beach can be absolutely stunning. There’s no wrong time of year to take a stroll on the perfect sand here and be sure to hunt for sea glass on Sunset Beach (also known as Cape May diamonds).
