Just 1.6-square-miles, this central Jersey community is as peaceful, close-knit and kid-friendly as they come. Highly ranked schools, low crime rates, affordable living and short commutes (thanks to plenty of highway access) earn this spot 12th place on our list, but it’s Milltown’s forward-thinking civic-mindedness that really makes it stand out. In recent years, the town has been funding projects to revitalize local businesses on Main Street (and promote the opening of new ones), preserve its roots as a gristmill community (a history that gives it it’s name, “Milltown”) and create more green space.
Milltown has eight parks currently, including a stretch of the gorgeous Lawrence Brook, home to bald eagles, otters, red fox and wild turkey—all of which add to Milltown’s small-town charm.
