The Advanced Spine Center

Jason E. Lowenstein, MD

A board-certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon, Dr. Jason Lowenstein is committed to taking a conservative approach when working with young patients dealing with scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis and sports-related injuries of the spine. He develops balanced treatment plans to manage his patients’ spinal issues. “Early diagnosis is extremely important when it comes to making treatment decisions, so we focus on tailoring treatment options for each individual patient as early as possible,” says the father of three.

TAKING A TEAM APPROACH

As the director of scoliosis and spinaldeformity at Morristown Medical Center/Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Dr. Lowenstein offers families his expertise and training in all aspects of adult and pediatric spine surgery. “I always take a team approach when working with patients,” he says. “I want children and families to play an active role in the treatment process.”

He specializes in the treatment of spinal deformity, including scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Lowenstein is a leader in the use of minimally-invasive spine surgery to treat spinal deformity. He has extensive experience in treating disc herniations and stenosis of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, and utilizes endoscopic techniques as well as artificial disc replacement for treatment of these disorders. Dr. Lowenstein has a particular interest in complex revision surgery for the treatment of failed back syndrome or for patients who have had previous spinal deformity surgery and require further surgical intervention. “Scoliosis surgery isn’t always a ‘one and done’ process; I see many patients who have had surgery but continue to require additional care, and we’re available to patients at all stages of development— from childhood to early adulthood and beyond,” he says. “We continue to follow our patients throughout their lives to provide total continuity of care.”

CHOOSING THE NON INVASIVE TREATMENT OPTION

When managing patients with scoliosis, Dr. Lowenstein believes in pursuing all non surgical options first, such as brace treatment or the Schroth method of scoliosis-specific exercises, with the goal of improving posture, eliminating pain and preventing curve progression. Dr. Lowenstein will utilize intraoperative CT guidance paired with computer-assisted navigation to offer patients less invasive surgeries with smaller incisions and faster recoveries.

“I choose the least invasive approach whenever possible,” he says. “When surgery is necessary, I often utilize minimally-invasive techniques to make the treatment process easier and reduce recovery time for my patients.”

HELPING PATIENTS RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES

A member of the Scoliosis Research Society, North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Lowenstein studied neuroscience and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, and performed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in adult and pediatric spine and scoliosis surgery at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Lowenstein currently practices at Morristown Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center. “We take a variety of different approaches to streamline our scoliosis and spinal treatments and make them as minimally invasive as possible,” he says. “It’s always our goal to help our patients of all ages return to their normal activities as quickly as possible.”

It’s never a one-size-fits-all approach.”

ADAPTIVE FITNESS AND WELLNESS OPPORTUNITIES

The practices limit the amount of patients they accept and maintain a close network of physicians to provide children with immersive, comprehensive care.

Most services take place in a child’s home, school and community where they’re most comfortable. “We treat people, we meet them where they are and we establish hope that healing can occur,” he says. “We’re also very collaborative, and always ensure that information is passed efficiently between providers.”

Dr. Galasso is passionate about creating adaptive and inclusive fitness and wellness opportunities for children and adults with intellectual, developmental, physical and emotional disabilities. “We’re one of the few truly adaptive fitness centers in the country, and utilize exergame technology to make fitness and therapy fun and engaging,” he says.

The family-based, child-centered modern practice is known for its warm and caring environment, and Dr. Sherman and his team pride themselves on delivering treatment in a friendly and non-threatening manner.

A LIFETIME OF HEALTHY SMILES

The expanded practice includes pediatric dentists Jocelyn Jeffries-Bruno, Britni Kearns, Jason Tesoriero and Binni Patel, as well as orthodontist Martin Rabinovich. The practice’s compassionate, dedicated staff helps families feel at home. “Our practice is very busy, and we think that speaks for itself,” he says. “We pride ourselves on providing a very high level of care to patients of all ages.” Dr. Sherman’s team offers one-on-one attention to foster trust with young patients and their parents. The dentists blend personalized care and cutting-edge technology with continuing education to offer a unique dental experience that’s interactive and fun for kids.

ELIMINATING FEAR FROM DENTAL VISITS

Dr. Sherman’s patients never have to fear going to the dentist. Laser dentistry, digital scanners and digital X-rays ensure pain-free appointments, while video games and televisions keep kids relaxed and entertained in the waiting area and treatment rooms. “When children start to relax in the chair, I know I’ve done my job,” he says. “If kids have positive experiences with the dentist from a young age, they won’t be afraid of coming to the dentist as they get older.”

Dr. Sherman and his team believe in involving parents in their child’s dental care to ensure the best possible outcomes. The dentists offer support and advice for parents on all aspects of pediatric dental care. Dr. Sherman also established the Jersey Shore Center for Breastfeeding and Infant Oral Health within the practice, and offers a frenectomy procedure using laser therapy to promote easier breastfeeding. “Our goal is always to make kids feel comfortable and safe, and provide them with a dental home,” he says.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES

A graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, Dr. Sherman completed his specialty training at the Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. The board-certified pediatric dentist is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, for which he served as the first public policy advocate for pediatric dentistry health in New Jersey.

“We strive to establish long-term relationships with our patients…I’ve been treating some of my patients for 20 years because they trust me and my staff, and they don’t want to leave our practice,” he says. “Working with kids and watching them grow has always been the most  rewarding part of what I do.”
