New Jersey Family: Tell us about Pie Girl and what makes it unique.

Chelsea Frost: PieGirl is a small batch bakery using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. Hooray for the Garden State! It’s super unique because pies aren’t something you find at most bakeries. There isn’t another dessert that triggers so many nostalgic memories as pie does and that’s one of the things that I love most about it.

NJF: When did your love of baking start and did you ever think you would turn it into a business?

CF: My love of baking started when I was really young and I spent so much time at the kitchen table with my mom baking very often. I never thought it would turn into what it is now. I graduated college with a masters and minors in philosophy, history of math and science, language and literature – not quite a baker’s transcript.

MATTHEW ROSENSWEIG

NJF: When did you launch Pie Girl and what was your biggest inspiration?

CF: I’ve been PieGirl for about eight or nine years now but really launched it as my sole focus two years ago. Inspiration comes from everywhere: my kids, my time working in the restaurant industry, but most especially, my hunger.

NJF: Which pies are most popular?

CF: I think the top three most popular are Salted Honey Lavender, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Sweet Jersey Corn Custard (when in season).

NJF: What was your proudest moment as a business owner?

CF: I think my proudest moment was June 3 when I had the official grand opening of the pie shop! Other proud moments often include the moments when I’m recognized in public as PieGirl, and the few times there have been articles written up in the newspaper and online articles.

NJF: What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever gotten that you want to share with others?

CF: Find what is sustainable for your life, and stick to it. Avoid burnout. Make time for the things that bring you joy. Be present in your kids’ lives; they’re only little for so long.

NJF: What’s it like juggling raising kids with running a business?

CF: It’s definitely hard, but setting boundaries for myself to fully be present with them when I’m home makes a huge difference. Eating breakfast with them, and walking them to school every morning, and reading out loud to them are huge parts of our day that I refuse to sacrifice. I want them to see what we’re capable of,  and how good it feels to do what you love.

NJF: What’s next for Pie Girl?

CF: Getting the brick and mortar open!
