NYC museums are a staple for field trips, summer vacation stops and weekends with the fam. Starting March 1, the Metropolitan Museum of Art will charge adults living outside of New York a mandatory admission fee of $25.
The Met, which has operated under a pay-as-you-wish policy since 1970, will continue to honor that policy for New York residents and students in the tri-state. The good news? Children under 12 will remain free, plus full-priced admission tickets will be honored for three consecutive days at the Met’s three locations, including the Met Breuer and the Cloisters.
This new policy change stems from the Met’s goal to create a reliable revenue stream in order to meet operational demands. According to its new admissions policy, paid admissions make up only 14 percent of the museum’s overall revenue. While the number of visitors has skyrocketed in the past 13 years, the portion that pay the full suggested admission has declined by a whopping 73 percent.
New York City will continue to support the Met’s operating costs since the city owns the Met’s Fifth Avenue building. For this reason, New York state taxpayers have the ability to pay-as-you-wish, though they will be required to show address identification.
