Looking for fun day trips during February break? The Intrepid Museum in New York City has lots to keep them entertained from February 15-22 during Kids Week. There’s a full itinerary packed with fun STEAM activities, NASA displays and exhibits, hands-on workshops, performances, live animals, special guests and interactive demos.
February 15-17 are NASA Explore Days, where kids will listen as NASA scientists and engineers talk about space adventures. Members from the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Marshall Space Flight Center and Goddard will be sharing their expertise with kids. They will make their own Intrepid space-themed souvenir using modeling clay, use a 3D printer, watch a world record holding balloon artist make his creations, listen to aircraft talks and hear from That Planetarium Guy.
Projects on February 18 and 19 focus on Arts & Culture. There will be exhibits set up by Ballet Hispanico School of Dance, New Victory Theatre, The Metropolitan Opera, Madame Tussauds New York, LEGOLAND Discovery Center Westchester, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Vital Theatre Company. Meet authors, watch a balloon artist magician, sit down for a showing of The Gazillion Bubble Show or relax in the Book Nook Reading Zone.
February 20-22 are filled with Nature & STEM activities. Animal lovers will learn from members of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Two by Two Animal Haven, Jenkinson’s Aquarium and Billion Oyster Project – and may even meet some animals one-on-one. Tech demos will be offered by Naval Surface Center Philadelphia, Naval Air STEM, American Society of Civil Engineers, MakerBot and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Topics include camouflage, conservation and biofacts.
Not only is all of this nearby in Manhattan, but it’s free with admission! Tickets are free for kids under 4 (as well as military members and veterans), $28 for kids ages 5-12, $36 for college students and seniors 65+, and $38 for adults ages 13-64; discounts are available for NYC residents.
The Intrepid Museum is located at Pier 86 on W. 46th St. and 12th Ave. in New York, NY. Museum hours are 10 am – 5 pm every day through March 31 (hours are extended during spring and summer). Check out the full schedule and itinerary online.
