What’s better than looking at a holiday lights display? Being able to interact with it!
Local artist Natasha Dzurny was so inspired by the lights along Fifth Avenue in NYC that she decided to create something closer to home. She made two different interactive displays for small businesses in the Hamilton Park section of Jersey City.
At WORD Bookstore on McWilliams Place, when you press the big red button, the animated light display in the window will tell you if you’re “Naughty” or “Nice.” Then, it will suggest book recommendations to match that were curated by the staff at WORD.
At Jersey City Bicycle Co. on Pavonia Avenue, an animatronic Santa is literally pedaling his way through the night sky over the city.
The displays were created in partnership with the retailers, Silverman Building and Jersey City Recreation, and were created using cardboard, tons of glitter, a laser cutter at the Hoboken Public Library, LED lights, and other electronics. Dzurny’s intent was to spread holiday cheer while also supporting businesses in the community – plus to tap into her passion of incorporationg technology into art.
