A Feminist Icon Joins Barbie’s Inspiring Women Lineup

The Susan B. Anthony doll’s release coincides with the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment.

The newest doll to join Barbie’s Inspiring Women line is…Susan B. Anthony! Available this fall, the doll wears a floor-length black dress accented with lace at the sleeves and bodice. Other details include Anthony’s spectacles and a lace collar fastened with a cameo brooch.

Mattel

The Inspiring Women Series pays tribute to heroines of their time and other dolls in the series include Sally Ride, Rosa Parks, Billie Jean King, Ella Fitzgerald and Florence Nightingale. They are all “courageous women who took risks, changed rules and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before,” said a spokesperson for Mattel.

“On November 5, 1872 while protesting and leading the charge for women’s voting rights, Susan B. Anthony made a defiant move,” said Mattel. “She voted in the presidential election and was arrested at her home in Rochester, NY. This bold act, coupled with Susan’s determined spirit, helped pave the way for passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which prevents a woman from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex.”

Also cool is that The National Susan B. Anthony Museum and House actually helped collaborate on the doll with Mattel.

“We were delighted that the design team from Mattel reached out to us early in the project, demonstrating their interest in a doll and packaging that would reflect Susan B. Anthony’s life and work, and that would launch in this historically significant year when we celebrate Susan B. Anthony’s 200th birthday, the 19th Amendment, and the Anthony Museum’s 75th anniversary,” said Deborah L. Hughes, president and CEO of the Anthony Museum on their website.

The doll retails for $29.99 and is available for purchase at Barbie.com and other retailers. Purchase includes a doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity. Colors and decorations may vary.
