On The Ice

How long has it been since you’ve taken the kids skating? From rinks with great views, to Friday night discos, to educational programs with Olympic gold medalist alums, lace up and check out our favorites!

Bridgewater Sports Arena

Come on Fridays for Family Night, when admission, skate rentals and 20 arcade tokens go for $12 a person (it doesn’t get more budget-friendly than that!). Or make skating part of your after-school weekday routine—The ice is open to the public every day (except holidays), as are the Bridgewater Sports Arena’s other amusements, like the LaserZone (think laser tag meets capture the flag), arcade (packed with more than 65 games!) and a three-story soft-play area.

Admission: $7/adult, $6/child
Skates: $3/rental

Ice House

Whether your kids are throwing triple axels or still hanging onto the walls for dear life, they’re in the right place. Home to four NHL regulation-size rinks, this skating facility is the tri-state area’s largest. Go for a casual spin during public skating hours (every Saturday and Sunday), or skate to the beat of DJ mixes during Skate Jam on Friday nights. Interested in lessons? You’re following in hallowed footsteps. This spot’s figure skating program has produced multiple Olympic gold medalists, including Sarah Hughes, Tara Lipinski and Oksana Baiul.

Jersey Shore Arena

Your first trip to the Jersey Shore Arena will probably be for the daily public skating on one of  three NHL regulation-size rinks. We’re guessing your second (and third and fourth) trip will be for what this spot does better than any other—DJ Skate. Every Friday night from 7:45 to 10:30 pm, the masses hit the ice for a dance party on blades, complete with strobe lights, disco balls and the sounds of a live DJ blasting through the arena’s brand new sound system. Need to give your legs a break? Step into the Penalty Box—home to a fully stocked arcade, state-of-the-art laser tag arena and café.

Newport Skates

Newport Skates’ rink may not be the biggest in the state, but it’s definitely the one with the most spectacular view! Located right on the Hudson River, it’s the perfect vantage point for some major NYC skyline ogling (and an amazing backdrop for family photos). Since this rink is small and quaint the kids can skate on their own and you can still keep track of them. Plus it’s open for public skating every day (as long as the ice stays frozen), including holidays. Just remember: This is an outdoor rink, so bundle up before heading out.
