World-Famous Budweiser Clydesdales Will Walk the Streets of Margate Next Week

This is a rare opportunity to see the majestic horses in a downbeach area

MARGATE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

Move over Lucy the Elephant, a new animal attraction is coming to town. The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of Anheuser-Busch beer since 1933, will be coming to Margate on August 15.

Beginning at 2 pm, you can watch as eight horses are harnessed and hitched to the famous red Budweiser beer wagon. Come to the beach block of Cedar Grove Avenue in front of the Island House condominium building.

The horses will make their way around the streets of Margate from 3-4 pm. From Cedar Grove Avenue beach block the hitch will travel south toward Longport, stopping for photos in front of Lucy the Elephant. The wagon will turn right onto Washington Avenue and proceed to Ventnor Avenue and make another right turn. The hitch will stop in front of the Historical Society building on Washington Avenue and continue around the corner in front of fire station 1 on Ventnor Avenue. The Clydesdales will make their way down Ventnor toward the Garden State Parkway and turn right onto Cedar Grove Avenue to head back toward the beach block where they will be unharnessed.

Canadians of Scottish descent brought the first Clydesdales to America in the mid-1800s. The horses were bred for hauling or plowing farms back then. Today they are used primarily for breeding and shows. Horses chosen for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least 3 years old, stand approximately 18 hands (that’s horse measurement for 6 feet) at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2,000 pounds, be bay in color, have four white legs, a blaze of white on the face, and a black mane and tail. A single Clydesdale will consume as much as 20-25 quarts of feed, 40-50 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water per day.

The Clydesales team tours the U.S. every year, and has performed at the Tournament of Roses Parade, the St. Louis Cardinals opening day, and Daytona Beach Bike Week already this year – but it’s rare to come to a downbeach area. Their appearance will be weather-dependent so fingers crossed for clear skies!
