A clothing company yanked a T-shirt with the phrase "Happy Girls Are the Prettiest" amid a firestorm of criticism among outraged customers who found it offensive.
UK retailer Next said Wednesday it would stop selling the children's long-sleeved top, sized for girls ages 3-16. The move was in response to a barrage of complaints on social media that it was casting a negative light on people struggling with depression and other mental illnesses.
“We have decided to remove the item from sale,” the company said in a tweet. “It was never our intention to upset or cause offense to any of our customers.”
The saying on the shirt, which cost between £9 and £12 ($13.64–$18.19), is actually part of a longer quote by the late actress Audrey Hepburn: “I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and I believe in miracles.”
A number of other retailers sell everything from tops and decorative pillows to journals with the same phrase on them.
