Teens who stay out too late in certain Jersey Shore towns could be at risk for breaking curfew. The issue comes to light after a particularly rough Memorial Day weekend, when Seaside Heights, Wildwood, Ocean City and Cape May dealt with reports of stabbings and gunfire (later found to be unsubstantiated).
North Wildwood and Sea Isle City have teen curfews from 10 pm to 6 am. In Ocean City, there is a curfew for anyone under 18 who is not accompanied by a parent or guardian from 11 pm to 6 am.
Toms River police want kids 17 and younger off the barrier islands from 10 am to 5 am if they’re not with an adult. This includes Ortley Beach and the northern beaches and continues through Labor Day.
Seaside Heights is a teen hot spot for its boardwalk games and rides but unaccompanied minors have to head home by 10 pm, where a curfew takes place until 5 am the following morning.
In Ocean Twp., those 13-17 must be off the streets by 11 pm, while kids 13 and younger must head home before 10 pm.
There are exceptions to every rule, such as if a teen is going to or from work, has to run an errand for their parent, there is an emergency situation, or there’s a religious holiday taking place. You’ll need to check with each town for their specific guidelines.
If your teen isn’t playing by the rules, you may suffer the consequences. Parents can be fined $1,000 and upward for their kid breaking the curfew law.
