Sure, the rides are thrilling in NJ, but so are the wildly delicious (and often artery-clogging) eats. Here are some of the most off-the-wall fair food finds that definitely aren’t for the faint of heart.
Deep-Fried Cream Cheese with Larvets
In the carnival world, one term usually defines the cuisine: deep-fried. Brian Shenkman’s stand prides itself on dunking anything and everything in oil, like cream cheese, which can be topped off with, yes, fried worm larve if you and the kids are daring enough.
The Donut Burger
This ultra-popular specialty that you can only get at Little Richard’s Café concession stand is exactly what it sounds like—a huge hamburger pattie smothered with American cheese, lettuce and tomato, snuggled between two plump, glazed donuts. (Talk about an upgrade from a sesame seed bun!)
Pot Roast Sundae
At first glance, the bowl looks like your run-of-the-mill dessert, but a closer inspection tells a different story. Hearty mashed potatoes act as the “ice cream” base and a healthy dose of gravy mimics hot fudge. For toppings, choose from cheese, corn and a hefty helping of slow-cooked pot roast.
Deep-Fried Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Peanut butter cups are pretty delicious on their own, but this takes it up a notch. The candies get dipped in batter, deep-fried and then topped off with a generous amount of powdered sugar.
Deep-Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly
The lunchtime staple gets dunked—fillings and all—into a humungous deep-fryer for three minutes, giving the Wonder bread favorite a delicate golden-brown crunch.
