Retro-themed diner the Chatterbox Drive-In may soon be closing its doors—and selling its land to Wawa, a popular convenience store and gas station giant.
Chatterbox, located on the corner of Rte.15 and Rte. 206 in Augusta, is a kid fave for its retro look and unique rounded shape (and the classic car right in the middle of the tables). The drive-in diner is known for its spectacular weekend car shows where old-time auto lovers can show off their vintage vehicles while a DJ cranks out classic tunes. Chatterbox is so beloved that it won our 2016 Golden Popsicle Award for Best Family-Friendly Food in North Jersey.
In an interview with New Jersey Herald, the restaurant’s owner, Don Hall, said he has agreed to a contract with Wawa, all though the deal is not set in stone. Though he admits it may not be a done deal, because the chain could pull out, and the the sale is still pending approval from the Frankford Land Use Board.
Either way, the Chatterbox will likely keep its doors open for at least another year while contracts are processed.
The “destination restaurant,” which is what Hall calls the Chatterbox, will be remembered for its old-fashioned diner favorites like burgers, ice cream sodas, milkshakes, kids meals served in vintage car replicas and of course, its classic mid-1900’s atmosphere. But thankfully, it’s not disappearing just yet, so you still have time to check it out! Don't miss the chili dogs!
