In response to recent news coverage of Leelah Alcorn’s death’s story and Caitlyn Jenner’s transition the Girl Scouts of America issued a statement reminding parents and kids that transgender* girls are welcome in the Scouts.
But one potential supporter of the organization took issue that stance. The Girl Scouts of Western Washington recently received a $100,000 donation, which would have been used to give financial aid to girls that who can’t afford to be Girl Scouts.
But the money came with a catch. “Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls,” the note accompanying the contribution said. “If you can’t, please return the money.”
The Girl Scouts responded by returning the funds, according to Girl Scouts of Western Washington council head Megan Ferland. “Girl Scouts is for every girl, and every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to,” Ferland said.
After the Girl Scouts announced it had returned the donation, they set up a page to raise money for the financial aid fund. In just two days, they raised over $250,000, more than twice the amount of money ost by turning down the controversial donation.
