A group of elementary school students in Monmouth County took the lessons they learned during the school year about making a difference and put them into action this summer.
A group of 11 fifth graders from Shrewsbury Borough School read “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies when they were fourth graders, and recruited their siblings and friends to help raise money by setting up lemonade stands in their neighborhoods.
At the end of the book, competing siblings donate their profits to a local animal shelter. The students of teacher Tanja Larsen chose to donate $1,414 to the Shrewsbury PBA and $1,414 to the Shrewsbury Hose Company.
“Students can get ideas from books, learn lessons from books and change their communities based on ideas that they’ve learned from books,” says Larsen, who read the book in June as part of the Book Club Unit in Readers’ Workshop.
The teams of students were recognized for their efforts, with first place awarded to the Patterson Avenue team that raised $1,083; second place went to Blades Run, which raised $778; the White Street team took home third place, raising $571; and Manson Park garnered fourth place by raising $368.
