Spring 5Ks in New Jersey You Should Run With Your Kids

5Ks are a great way to get the kids into running, here are some that you should start with.

Thinking of getting your kid into running, but don’t really know where to start? Pick a 5K (we recommend picking one that has a fun theme) and get the whole family running. (If you don’t run yourself, the Couch 2 5K app  is amazing). And most of these runs are family-friendly, meaning that if you need to walk, it’s fine. The Road Runners Club of America suggests that kids as young as six can start doing 5K run/walks (sticking between 30 and 45 minutes of total running time), and the national Girls on the Run program starts kids doing 5Ks at third grade (usually around age 8). So there's no definitive "right" time, but if your kid is the one running around the playground and never tires out, this might be a good time to start channeling that energy. But you should always focus on keeping it fun and not making it competitive, and if the kids complain of any pains, stop immediately. Check with your child's pediatrician if you have any concerns about starting a running program. And if the kids want to start on the younger side, but aren't ready to tackle 3.1 full miles, a lot of these great races offer 1 mile fun runs to give the little kids a taste of racing.

Tips: If you want a run without crowds, start with a  local run — check your rec department for races. Make sure whatever race you choose allows younger kids (many trail races don’t allow kids under 12) and that there isn’t a strict time limit to race (those little legs may take a little longer). You’ll also want to register in advance. Not only do many races sell out, but you’ll often get a freebie shirt, or a discounted entry fee if you sign up ahead of time.
