Sidewalk Chalk: An Activity from Productive Parenting

An activity for a late 1-year-old

Materials you will need:

Large pieces of sidewalk chalk

What to do:

Chalk drawing strengthens your child's hand muscles that develop fine motor skills. This fun activity will encourage your child's creativity as well. Let your child draw on the driveway or sidewalk with sidewalk chalk. Encourage your child to use the pincer grasp* when holding chalk.

* Have your child grasp the chalk with the index finger and thumb, resting in on the thumb and middle fingers.

Variations:

Have your child draw with chalk on a chalkboard indoors.
