History suggests that Lionel Sternberger was working at his father’s California sandwich shop when he dropped a slice of American cheese on a hamburger sometime in the 1920s. Whether or not that’s urban legend, it’s reason enough to celebrate on September 18. On National Cheeseburger Day there are plenty of places serving up a juicy cheeseburger.
