If you’re reading this, you’re probably at least vaguely aware that a tropical storm named Sandy (she sounds so pretty and perky, right?) is headed up the eastern seaboard.
Experts are warning that when Sandy and an artic weather system coming in from the west meet, they will join forces to create a powerful storm, the likes of which we have not experienced for decades in the Garden State.
While the media has aptly named this freakish condition Frankenstorm, it’s time to put aside the candy (and any last-minute costume-making) to prepare ourselves for high winds, flooding, loss of power, or worse. Take a moment to review this survival guide prepared by NJ’s Office of Emergency Management to do what you can to make sure your family is safe.
The high-level overview includes:
- Stay informed with breaking-news alerts. Make sure you equip your radio with fresh batteries just in case.
- Make a plan that includes designating a family member out of state to serve as an emergency contact.
- Build an emergency kit, including basic supplies and important papers, and store your kit in a convenient place known to all family members.
- If you are told to evacuate, go!
Please, be safe. And we hope to see some fabulous costume pics come October 31.
