If you’re looking for a fun family beach destination, look no further than the Wildwoods. Once you cross the George Redding Bridge and get to the “Welcome to the Wildwoods” sign, you know a ton of family fun awaits. Did you also know that a lot of activities are also free?

  1. The beaches are free. The white sand beaches along the five-mile island are all completely free. You can build a sand castle, boogie board, play frisbee or bask in the summer sun.
  2. There are bike paths. It’s a 12-mile roundtrip ride if you start at the farthest southern end along the Dunes Bike Path in Wildwood Crest, then going up the path to the boardwalk and through North Wildwood’s Mulberry Bike Path to the North Wildwood Sea Wall. There are special bike lanes around the entire island.

3. The boardwalk (all 2 miles of it) is everything! Anywhere along its 38 blocks you can go fishing off the pier, crab in the tidal marsh areas and watch a fireworks display every Friday at 10 pm. Kids will absolutely love the rides and games (though make no mistake – those are not free). The sights, the sounds and the smells all scream Jersey Shore in the summer.

4. There’s lot of art and history. The Icon Wall Murals project showcases musical artists from the area such as Bobby Rydell, whose hit song “Wildwood Days” has become the official anthem of the Wildwoods. Other artists include Bill Haley & The Comets, who introduced the country’s first rock ‘n roll hit song “Rock Around the Clock” at the Hof Brau Hotel in Wildwood; and Chubby Checker, who first introduced “The Twist” at the Wildwoods’ Rainbow Club. You can also take a self-guided tour on foot or by car of the architecture around town. Pay your respects at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

5. The festivals are definitely worth the drive. Fourth of July will offer a huge festival on the beach, and you can celebrate Christmas in July mid-month. On July 7, build your own sandcastle or watch the pros during the Wildwood Crest Amateur Sand Sculpting Festival.
