In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shootings in Newtown, CT, the One Million Moms for Gun Control (1MM4GC) organization was formed. In addition to the nationwide effort, local chapters are also forming throughout the country with the purpose of enacting new, stricter laws about gun purchase and use.
Two New Jersey moms – Jaime Bedrin of Montclair and Mandi Perlmutter of North Caldwell – are leading the One Million Moms effort here as organizers of the New Jersey chapter. In addition to building up support for ongoing initiatives, Jaime and Mandi particularly focused on an event which occurred on Saturday, January 26, bringing attention to the need for "enacting common sense gun control laws in America."
From 11am to 1pm, representatives of the New Jersey Chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control (1MM4GCNJ) and Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy stood together in solidarity and showed their support for gun control in New Jersey and nationwide in Jersey City's Lincoln Park (West Side and Belmont Avenues).
Attendees were asked to make and bring signs with them on Saturday, and many used the unifying message that "Moms Demand Action." Many also created and wore heart pins, as part of the national campaign asking "How do you wear your heart?"
Also on Saturday, other local chapters held rallies across the country and the national chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control held a March on Washington for Gun Control in the nation's capitol.
