NJ School Bans In-Class Halloween Celebrations

Seth Boyden Elementary School in Maplewood banned Halloween costumes out of respect for its diverse community.

If you were planning to watch the kids parade in costumes around the school next Friday, you won't be able to at Maplewood’s Seth Boyden Elementary School this Halloween.

In a letter sent to parents on October 12, Principal Mark Quiles and PTA Co-Presidents, Amelia Rickenberg and Donna Upton announced that there will be no in-class Halloween celebrations this year citing its diverse community as the reason.

The letter states, "In the past, in-school celebrations of Halloween have made many of our students feel left out… (and as) a result, after careful consultation and deliberation, we have decided not to hold in-school Halloween activities."

According to administrators in the South Orange-Maplewood School District, nearly 20 percent of students did not take part in last year’s Halloween activities for cultural or religious reasons.
