Though this South Jersey backdrop was the inspiration for the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois in the Halloween movies (yes, we’re talking about the slasher films with Michael Myers), there’s nothing spooky about this town when it comes to raising a family.
The blue ribbon schools offer a great education to the mid-size city of just more than 11,500 people and there’s plenty to do when the kids aren’t hitting the books. Weekends are spent at the farmers market that runs from May to November. Also not to be missed: Haddonfield’s Crafts & Fine Arts Festival, where vendors dot the main drag for the weekend and the annual Fall Festival, where kids make their own scarecrows.
Downtown Haddonfield meets every family’s needs with more than 200 shops and restaurants. Try the Tre Famiglia Restaurant (a kid-friendly spot that serves up delicious Italian fare) or order one of three eggs Benedict options at the Bistro at Haddonfield, a popular breakfast and lunch spot. And if you can get sneak out for a night, head to one of Jersey wine country’s many vineyards only a short drive away.
Just ten minutes from the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin bridges, zipping over to Philadelphia is a breeze for commuters. Despite being super close to city life, there’s still plenty of green space within the borough’s limits. Head to Hopkins Pond for an afternoon of fishing or burn off some energy at Montwell Park Playground. Another fun fact: the first-ever relatively complete dinosaur skeleton in North America was dug up at Pennypacker Park. —Murphy Moroney
