New Jersey Family: What is The Circus Place and what makes it unique?

Sharyn Brandman: The Circus Place is a non-competitive environment where athleticism and artistry converge. From aerial silks to wire walking, students learn skills that empower and challenge their bodies and minds, while alleviating some of the stress that sometimes comes from team sports.

NJF: When did you launch the business and what was your biggest inspiration?

SB: I launched my business in 2011, when no one in New Jersey had really even heard of circus arts outside of a Ringling show! My biggest inspiration was my son learning to juggle in middle school. Juggling made him feel accomplished and successful. As I watched his self-esteem and confidence grow with each new trick, I knew I had found something for kids who didn’t fit the traditional mold of team sports.

NJF: How are you and your business involved in the community?

SB: Our school hosts workshops and performances for local community foundations, such as Good Grief, GiGi’s Playhouse and Steps Together.

NJF: What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever gotten that you want to share with others?

SB: ‘Know what you don’t know.’ In other words, take the time to learn what you’re not an expert in, then find the people who are so you can grow your knowledge alongside them. Keep those people as mentors and never be too shy to ask for help.
