May STEM Events for Your Mini Makers

Looking for things to do with your little science lovers? We’ve rounded up some of the best STEM events in the NJ area.

May flowers signal the perfect time for your budding scientists to get the hands-on experience with science, technology, engineering and math they crave. There are tons of STEM activities around the state, like the opening of a new STEM-themed play space in Millburn and planetary storytime in Trenton.

Genius Gems Opening

Where: Genius Gems, Millburn
Price: Free
Deets: This 5,000-square-foot play space is dedicated to STEM-based play for ages 2-12. Check it out for free on May 3 during their soft launch. Registration required.

Saturday, May 5

Radical Rocketeers

Where: Warren County Library, Hackettstown
Price: Free
Deets: On the first Saturday of every month, all ages are welcome to try their hand at rocket building. Basic supplies will be provided, but you can also bring your own. Registration required.

Wednesday, May 9

LEGO Robotics Trial Class

Where: Hadoop Express, Parsippany-Troy Hills
Price: $25
Deets: Ages 5-12 can use LEGO Robotics kits, computers and iPads to create their very own robots. Equipment will be provided, including the motors, gears and axle sensors.

Saturday, May 12

Robotics Programming Club

Where: Warren County Library, Hackettstown
Price: Free
Deets: If you’ve got a high schooler (or grown-up) interested in robots, this club is the perfect place to start. Learn to use JAVA computer programming language, the relationships between sensors, motors and software and more. Discuss theory, problems and logic, plus learn about the first robots. Registration required, bring your own laptop.

High in the Himalayas

Where: Staten Island Children’s Museum, Staten Island, NY
Price: Free with admission
Deets: Learn about the highest point on Earth, Mt. Everest, and the types of rocks found in the Himalayas at the Con Edison Second Saturday Science workshop.

May Small Explorers Program

Where: New Jersey State Museum, Trenton
Price: Free
Deets: Kiddos under age 5 are invited to a galactic storytime, then a visit to the Planetarium and STEAM center for hands-on activities like creating astronaut helmets and decorating rocket ships.

STEAM AHEAD

Where: Morris County Library, Whippany
Price: Free
Deets: Grades 4-6 can pop by and get their STEAM on every Saturday until May 19. Registration required. On May 26, explore science with an entertaining activity.

STEM Classes

Where: L3 Academy, Montclair
Price: $80-249
Deets: There’s always STEM to be had at L3 Academy. Try classes like Coding Gals, LEGO Robotics, Jr. Coders, Coding, Introduction to Robotics, STEM Samplers, Chess and other courses.

Unseen Oceans

Where: American Museum of Natural History, NYC
Price: $28/adults, $16.50/kids
Deets: Check out the interactive media installations, watch 3D animations of great white sharks swimming, try the magnetic sand table and visit live marine animals when you learn about the ocean and technology used to explore. Ends January 6, 2019.

Thomas and Friends—Explore the Rails

Where: Liberty Science Center, Jersey City
Price: Included with admission
Deets: Thomas introduces kids to science, technology, engineering and math through fun activities and play. Kids can climb into Thomas’ cab and take the controls, make repairs to Percy in the Sodor Steamworks shop, dress up like a conductor, play at the Tot Spot and so much more.
