LEGO Ideas encourages fans to design and submit their ideas for pop culture figures, and ones that are reviewed and supported are actually produced. This has already worked for the likes of Doctor Who and Adventure Time, and is now happening for the very deserving Women of NASA.
The set idea was pitched and designed by Maia Weinstock, a science writer/editor who wanted to give these women the recognition they deserve. The idea garnered the support of more than 10,000 people before getting formally reviewed by a LEGO Review Board. The set was officially approved on February 28 and became available for purchase November 1.
Members of the set include computer scientist Margaret Hamilton, the first African-American woman in space Mae Jemison, the first woman in space Sally Ride and astronomer Nancy Grace Roman. Mathematician Katherine Johnson, the inspiration behind Hidden Figures, did not grant approval and was not included in this set.
