Kids Can: Play with Temporary Tattoos, Have a Fancy Day, & More

Kids Can

… get ready for springtime fun with whimsical temporary tattoos from Tattly. Sold in pairs of two identical tattoos ($5), they’re perfect for friends and siblings to share, and there are larger sets for parties ($15) of eight tattoos with themes like “Monster” and “Rainbow.” All products are non-toxic and safe for all ages.

… have a patriotic picnic. Enjoy an old-fashioned family picnic over the long Memorial Day weekend with red, white, and blue foods. Make a triple-decker sandwich layered with cherry jelly, cream cheese, and blueberry jelly for a tasty and patriotic lunch. Or, create strawberry, marshmallow, and blueberry kabobs—just bring the items unassembled so the kids can put them together for a fun activity. Go on a nature hunt for sticks and stones, followed by playing checkers on this scarf-turned-game-board.

… have a "Fancy Girl" day. Make any day extra-special for mothers and daughters with these ideas from Hilary Morris of the website A Fancy Girl Must. Morris suggests finding something you both like, whether it’s getting a manicure (let your mini-me pick your color, no matter how outrageous!) or taking a train ride together to explore a new town. As Morris puts it, “Really, most fancy girls want to be just like mom and do whatever fancy things she does. It’s just about feeling like a ‘big girl’ and doing something special (and fancy) with mom.”

… "be bubbly." Kids will be mesmerized by Happy (2012, Lemniscaat), a picture book filled with vibrant and engaging fish drawings, each depicting a different emotion from happy and sad to curious. Written and illustrated by Mies van Hout, fans of Happy will be glad to learn her next book Friends (2013, Lemniscaat), which is similar in style but features monsters, is already out. Both books are $17.95, and recommended for ages 2+.

… explore art in NYC. “A Year With Children 2013,” a presentation of artwork created by New York City public-school children in grades 2–6, opens May 3 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1071 Fifth Avenue). The exhibit is part of the museum’s Learning Through Art program, which partners professional artists with classroom teachers throughout NYC public schools in year-long residencies. On display are approximately 100 student artworks including drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures. To learn more, visit guggenheim.org or call 212-423-3500.

… learn to put their shoes on the right feet all by themselves with Shoezooz. These clever, educational stickers adhere to the inner-shoe, and when shoes are put on correctly, each half sticker goes together to create one full animal. Sold in packs of three sets. ($5.99)
