Did you know you should test your smoke detector every month? Here’s what else you can do to keep your home safe, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Fire Protection Association:
• Keep your tree at least three feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heating vents, lamps and candles. Toss string lights that have worn cords or loose bulbs. Water your real tree daily to keep it fresh.
• Replace all smoke alarms when they’re 10 years old (when you first install them, write the date in marker so you’ll remember).
• Don’t leave candles unattended where pets or kids could accidentally knock them over.
• Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace since it can ignite suddenly and cause a flash fire.
